The 26th China Hi-Tech Fair (CHTF 2024), an influential technology event attended by government officials, innovative company leaders, scientists, experts and professional visitors, will be held at the Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center (Bao'an) from November 14 to 16. FlexEnable, a leading company specializing in flexible electronics, will introduce its latest products applicable to augmented reality and virtual reality and the world’s first mass-produced consumer product incorporating organic transistor technology at the International Exhibitors area of CHTF 2024 (Hall 15, B23).

FlexEnable’s award-winning technology platform, together with our unique FlexiOM™ materials, brings transformational possibilities to products including AR and VR optics, ePrivacy screens, automotive smart windows and displays.

The organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) backplane process developed by FlexEnable allows transistors to be manufactured at less than 100°C – by far the lowest temperature process for transistor manufacturing in the world. This enables, for the first time, commonly available and optically ideal flexible bio-degradable substrates such as TAC film to be used instead of glass.

FlexEnable’s game-changing technology is used to make active-matrix flexible displays and flexible active liquid crystal (LC) optical films which are thin, light and conformable to almost any surface. Our OTFT display technology is already on the market today incorporated into a consumer product – the Ledger Stax, a cryptocurrency wallet with an E Ink display uniquely wrapped around a 180-degree bend.

Today, FlexEnable has around 500 patents and patent applications globally for OTFT and LC cell materials, processes and device architectures. With an established supply chain for OTFT production, FlexEnable has technology transfer programmes and mass production underway with several leading display manufacturers in Asia as well as commercial programmes with some of the world’s biggest brands in consumer electronics.

1. Flexible liquid crystal dimming film for augmented reality

FlexEnable’s liquid crystal dimming technology provides global dimming of unpolarised light and can also be integrated with our OTFT technology to enable pixelation and therefore pixel-level dimming control. This allows virtual objects to be clearly visible and appear solid even as external lighting conditions change. The film can be applied to the biaxial curvature required for AR lenses and adds virtually no additional weight or thickness to device optics, while increasing user comfort.

2. Tunable liquid crystal lens for augmented and virtual reality

Our tunable liquid crystal lenses, built on optically ideal plastic substrates, can actively adjust focus, bringing perceived and actual image depth together consistently, by compensating for focal differences between the virtual and the real. At less than 100 microns thick and weighing a fraction of a gram, our lenses can be stacked for increased focal power or combined with other flexible liquid crystal cells to provide additional features such as ambient dimming.

3. Ledger Stax - the world’s first mass-produced consumer product incorporating organic transistor technology

Ledger Stax is a secure cryptocurrency wallet developed by French company and market-leader Ledger. It features an E Ink display with a radius of curvature never before achieved in a commercial product, made possible by the use of highly flexible organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs), comprising organic materials and process IP developed, supplied and licensed by FlexEnable.
